Butterwell mine is a new open cut coal mine near Morpeth in Northumberland. The mine is owned and operated by UK Coal.

Production
The mine was commissioned in 2011/2012.[1] On its website UK Coal states that operations started in October 2011 "with coal production starting in May 2012.>[2]
The planning permission for the mine is for a total of 1 million tonnes of coal to be extracted over 41 months. Planning permission nwas granted in May 2011.[3]
