Callum Roberts

Callum Roberts "is a marine conservation biologist, oceanographer, renowned author, research scholar and professor in the Environment Department of the University of York, United Kingdom. His work is dedicated to examining the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems, particularly on coral reefs. He is currently focused on gaining acceptance of marine reserves and is working with fishers to promote the concept more broadly. Roberts is the author of numerous scientific papers, articles and books, including the recently published and highly acclaimed book “The Unnatural History of the Sea.” He has served on a U.S. National Research Council Committee on Marine Protected Areas and has also been a member of the Marine Reserves Working Group at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in California. He is an active contributor to the Coral Reef Fish Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Roberts has collaborated with SeaWeb on a number of projects over the years and has served as an effective spokesperson for the marine scientific community with both policymakers and the media. He was awarded a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation in 2000 to tackle obstacles to implementing marine reserves, and in 2001 he was awarded a Hardy Fellowship in Conservation Biology at Harvard University."
