Commonly referred to as CanWest, the company is owned by the Asper Family of Winnipeg. Its current CEO, Leonard Asper, is the son of CanWest's founder, the late Izzy Asper.

CanWest has a number of subsidiaries including:

• CanWest MediaWorks, which has extensive radio and television interests in Canada and the National Post newspaper;
• CanWest MediaWorks Publications which has extensive interests in Canadia newspapers; and
• CanWest MediaWorks International, which has interests in radio and television networks in New Zealand, Australia and Ireland.

Controversy

CanWest has been criticized for exercising too much central control of editorial policy at its subsidiaries. In addition, in 2007 Can West engaged in corporate expansion that flouts Canada's foreign ownership limits. It bought the 13 cable channels of Alliance Atlantis, including Showcase and History Television, in partnership with New York investment bank Goldman Sachs. [1]
