Carolan Kelly Stiles "has a history of commitment to environmental, media, and women’s issues. She sits on the board of the International Women's Media Foundation and actively supports its programs. Carolan also served on Colorado’s NPR Community Advisory Committee in 2005. Carolan holds a master’s in social work and a law degree. She worked with homeless women and children in Seattle, taught in an urban elementary school in Los Angeles, and provided medical care for indigenous people in New Mexico. As a law student, she focused on impeding excessive drilling in the Rocky Mountains. As an attorney, Carolan is the founder and president of Blue Creek Foundation, which focuses on core environmental issues around water. Blue Creek is committed to bringing about change through direct legal action, education, and coalition building. As a sixth generation member of a small media family, which technically retains voting control over its 150-year-old company, McClatchy Inc., Carolan works with the company’s management and directors to navigate through issues facing publishers in the age of electronic media."
