Methods used in discourse to persuade an audience, sometimes legitimately, but more often to mislead. They can also lead to mistaken ideas being more widely believed than they would be if the subject were engaged in a non-rhetorical way. They can even be completely ill thought out or dishonest, employing logical fallacies.
