Background on Plant

The three existing coal-fired units of Chifeng Yuanbaoshan power station, units 2-4 totaling 1,800 MW, were brought online between 1985 and 2007. Unit 1 of 300 MW was commissioned in 1978 and retired in 2011. The plant is owned by Yuanbaoshan Power Generation Company Limited, which became part of China Guodian in 2014.[1][2]

Description of Expansion

According to a World Resources Institute report (2012), there are plans to build additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW.[3]

However, as of 2015 the project is not mentioned on the website for the power station, and appears to have been shelved or abandoned.[1]

Ownership

On August 28 2017, China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) announced that China Guodian Corporation and Shenhua Group will be jointly restructured. Shenhua Group will become China National Energy Investment Group and will absorb China Guodian Corporation. It will be the largest power company in the world by installed capacity, as well as the world's largest coal producer.[4][5] The merger was completed on November 28, 2017.[6]
