Chongqing power station (神华国能重庆发电厂), also known as Chongqing Huangjueping Power Station (重庆黄角坪电厂) and Chongqing Power Station East campus (重庆发电厂东厂) is a 400-megawatt (MW) coal plant in Chongqing Municipality, China. It was retired in 2015.
An additional 1,320 MW has been proposed. It was relocated to a different site and is called Chongqing Wansheng Power Station (神华国能重庆万盛发电厂).[1]

Background on Plant
Chongqing Power Station was built in 1952. After seven expansions, the capacity reached 800MW in 1995. 4 units with 50MW each were retired in 1984. Units 5 and 6, totaling 400 MW, were brought online in 1986.[2]
In early 2014, as part of an effort to reduce air pollution, the Chongqing city government ordered the entire plant closed for failing to meet environmental codes.[3] The last unit was reportedly shut down in 2015.[4][5]
Description of Planned Expansion and Closure
In 2013 Shenhua announced plans to build two additional coal-fired units (7 and 8), in a different location, with a total planned capacity of 1,320 MW.[6] The units received environmental clearance and began construction in 2015. The new location is at Guanba Town, Qijiang District.[7]
The two units started preliminary construction at the new location in October 2016, after receiving the DRC permit in April 2015.[8][9] The new location has drawn criticism since it is close to the World Natural Heritage Site Jinfo Mountain（金佛山世界自然遗产), which is 50km away.[10]
As of December 2019 there has been no further construction progress, and the project appears to be shelved.
Ownership
The plant was originally owned by Shenhua Group. On August 28 2017, China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) announced that China Guodian Corporation and Shenhua Group will be jointly restructured. Shenhua Group will become China National Energy Investment Group and will absorb China Guodian Corporation. It will be the largest power company in the world by installed capacity, as well as the world's largest coal producer.[11][12] The merger was completed on November 28, 2017.[13]
