Coal River Mountain Watch (CRMW), based in West Virginia, is an environmental group that seeks to stop mountaintop removal mining, to improve the quality of life in the state of West Virginia and to help rebuild sustainable communities.
Founded in 1998, CRMW was formed after local citizens organized after being exposed to downstream debris from mountaintop removal sites. The group, as their website states, "began as a small group of volunteers working to organize the residents of southern West Virginia to fight for social, economic, and environmental justice."
The group has participated in demonstrations against the sludge dam near Marsh Fork Elementary School.[1]
