Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax
This article is part of the Center for Media & Democracy's spotlight on front groups and corporate spin. |
The Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax is a front group funded by the Washington Food Industry, 7-Eleven, Inc. and the Progressive Bag Affiliates of the American Chemistry Council. The latter two groups both represent the interests of plastics manufacturers.
The Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax sprang up in response to an ordinance enacted in July, 2008 by the City of Seattle to place a 20-cent advance recovery fee on all grocery carryout bags. The group is trying to get a measure on the 2009 ballot to repeal the measure.
