Cole Campbell

Cole Campbell "is dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. His teaching, research and service interests lie in the relationship between journalism and democracy how journalism as a profession, institution and business serves citizens and public life.

"Before joining the Reynolds School in July 2004, he was a senior associate of the Charles F. Kettering Foundation, which studies what it takes for democracy to work well. He also has been a strategic consultant and facilitator for public engagement processes, including the Common Ground project of the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission.

"Cole is the former editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in Missouri, The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia, Tar Heel: The Magazine of North Carolina and The Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He also has been a reporter and assigning editor at the Greensboro News & Record and The News & Observer in Raleigh, as well as a reporter at the Chapel Hill Newspaper and a stringer for Newsweek and Religion News Service.

"Cole is the editor, with Roy Peter Clark, of The Values and Craft of American Journalism: Essays from the Poynter Institute (Tallahassee, FL: University Press of Florida, 2002). He is the author of a textbook on argumentation and author of a variety of articles published in scholarly and professional publications, including Journalism Studies, Journal of Mass Media Ethics, Nieman Reports and the ASNE Bulletin.

"Cole has been active in a number of professional organizations and in seminars and panels at a wide variety of scholarly and professional conferences, including the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the American Press Institute, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Pulitzer Prize juries, the National Association of Minority Media Executives, the Inter American Press Association and the Mid-America Press Institute. He has presented at conferences organized by the University of Alabama, Columbia University, Indiana University, University of Maryland, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri (Columbia and St. Louis campuses), Northwestern University and Stanford University. He served as a member of the Board of Visitors at the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama and served on a similar board at Norfolk State University.

"Cole was a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University. He is a graduate of the Advanced Executive Program of the Media Management Center at Northwestern University. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is pursuing doctoral studies in public discourse and democratic practice at the Union Institute of Cincinnati, Ohio."
