Background on Plant
Datang 803 Power Station was founded in 1958. The first 3 units were commissioned between 1966 and 1970 with total capacity of 85MW. In 2002, China Datang became its parent company. Unit 4 with 50MW was completed in 2005. In 2007, unit 2 was shut down to meet the requirement of developing an additional 2*330MW units. Units 1, 2, and 4 were retired in 2017. The power plant is in the middle of desert and supplies electricity and heat to the nearby atomic bomb laboratory base, which was only known by its code name 404. It is also a back-up electricity supply source for the Jiuquan satellite launching base and other military enterprises. 803 is a code name for this power plant.[1]
Description of Expansion
Datang plans two additional coal-fired CHP units at this plant, units 5-6, with a total planned capacity of 600 MW.[2]
The new units were permitted by NDRC in November 2011, and started construction in 2012, aiming operation in 2014.[3]But due to unknown reason, it has been stopped for 3 years. Only in April 2015, the construction restarted.[4] [4] Unit 1 began operating in December 2016,[5] and unit 2 in February 2017.[6] The older units were fully retired in May 2017. The capacity of Datang 803 remains 660MW.[7]
