In 1998 he participated in a protest, organised by Reason Magazine, against a Californian law banning smoking in bars and restaurants. "About a dozen other protesters also puffed away on cigars and cigarettes [in violation of the smoking ban] in a publicity stunt sponsored by Reason magazine, which was promoting a newly released book on the "anti- smoking crusade," CNN reported.[2] He also wrote an introduction to a collection of Reason Magazine articles.
The non-profit group Advocates for Self-Government lists Carey as a Libertarian. [3]
