EcoBiotics
EcoBiotics
"EcoBiotics Limited is a company based in far North Queensland that specialises in the discovery of new drugs and agrochemicals from tropical rainforests (biodiscovery). At EcoBiotics they use a unique approach to biodiscovery that is based on an understanding of the ecology of the tropical rainforest. As this approach is highly targeted, collection strategies used by the company result in negligible impact on the natural environment.
"EcoBiotics has an agreement with the ARF (Australian Rainforest Foundation) which allows the company access to ARF governed rainforests for biodiscovery purposes in return for royalty payments from sale of any products developed from collected material." [1]
"When they first founded the business, Dr Reddell took a job with an environmental consulting group within Rio Tinto as their principal ecologist for three years to basically keep the money coming in, while Dr Gordon started full time." [2]
"EcoBiotics Limited has also signalled Queensland’s biotechnology credentials to the world by signing an agreement with London-based cancer drug developer Antisoma...
"In 2001, EcoBiotics received a State Government Innovation Start-Up Scheme (ISUS) grant assisting the company at a critical early stage of development and in 2003, the company signed a benefit sharing agreement with the Queensland Government allowing the company to conduct biodiscovery in tropical rainforest areas."
