Background

In September 2014, a team of officials from the central electricity authority (CEA) inspected a site in Etah district for an ultra mega power project in Uttar Pradesh.

The CEA team gave an in-principal approval to the project in Etah, which was announced in March 2015. The project — to be implemented through the competitive bidding route and entailing an investment of approximately Rs 25,000 crore — will be developed on a built-own-and-transfer (BOT) basis. The project is planned to be ready by 2020-21.

In March 2016 the India government said it planned to bid out three ultra mega power projects that year: Cheyyur in Tamil Nadu, Bedabahal in Odisha and Kakwara (Banka) in Bihar. Etah was not included. A search for news reports on the Etah proposal finds no activity since mid-2015, suggesting that the project is not being pursued.
