Ethan Gutmann
Ethan Gutmann is an Adjunct Fellow for The Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
"Ethan Gutmann is a recognized authority on American business involvement in China's Internet and an advocate of Chinese democracy. His research opened a line of investigation that culminated in American Congressmen cross-examining representatives of Cisco, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft on their collusion with Chinese government censorship and surveillance of political dissidents. Gutmann has been invited to brief US government agencies, debate the US-China Business Council, and speak at media events throughout the world.
"Formerly a Senior Counselor at APCO China and a Visiting Fellow at Project for the New American Century, Gutmann has also written on security issues, the growth of Chinese nationalism, and the US business scene in Beijing for the Asian Wall Street Journal, Investor’s Business Daily, the Weekly Standard, and other publications. Gutmann's book, Losing the New China received several awards, including the "Spirit of Tiananmen" (2005), the "Chan's Journalism Award" for outstanding writing (2005), and the New York Sun's "Best Book of 2004."
"In the 1990s, Gutmann served as Chief Investigator for the AV network in Washington, DC, directing “American Investigator,” the network's most popular documentary series. The show’s findings galvanized three Congressional and SEC inquiries. Prior to that, Gutmann specialized in arms control and dynamic modeling as a foreign policy analyst at the Brookings Institution. Gutmann completed both a B.A. and a Master of International Affairs at Columbia University in New York.
