Background

Garo Hills power station has been proposed by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPC). The status of the project is described on the NEEPC website as follows:

• MOA signed with the Government of Meghalaya on 17.03.2011.
• Preliminary survey works of the project site completed. Project site identified near Darugiri, East Garo Hills District. However, finalisation of the site, by the Site Selection Committee of CEA is awaited.
• Expression of interest for Empanelment of Firms/Companies for Coal Linkage for the Project floated on 23.12.2011. The EOI opened as schedule on 09.02.2012 and is in the final stage of evaluation.
• Expression of interest for Empanelment of land owners of coal bearing areas in Garo Hills District for lease of land for coal mining activities was floated on 12.06.2012.
• GM (E/M) has been posted as head of project and taken over charge.

NEEPC lists the power station on its website as 500 MW, but a 2013 Platts list puts it at 720MW. A 2012 press report described the plant as 750 MW and located it in Nangalbibra.

As of April 2015 no permits or applications are listed on the India MoEF website, and the project appears to be abandoned.
