Glades
{{#Badges: CoalSwarm}} Florida Power & Light (FPL) proposed to build two 980 megawatt ultra-supercritical coal plants in Glades County, Florida. The proposed station is referred to as the Glades project.[1]
The Glades County Commission approved the project in September 2006. Prior to this approval, the St. Lucie County Commission denied FPL’s proposal to build the plant. The Sierra Club, Florida Wildlife, Earthjustice, Environment Florida, Save It Now Glades, and other local groups have led a broad opposition to the plant.[2]
In June 2007, the Florida Public Service Commission voted 4-0 to deny the determination of need, ruling that the costs and risks of the new plants were too great.[3]
