Background

The Greater Soutpansberg Project (GSP) is a long-term project owned by MC Mining composed of three other projects -- the Chapudi coal project, Mopane coal project and the Generaal coal project.[1] The GSP is near the Musina–Makhado special economic zone (SEZ) designated by the South African government for the development of metallurgical plants and a coal-fired power station.[2]

In December 2018, MC Mining secured the mining right for Chapudi,[3][4] which caused MC Mining's shares to rise.[5]. However, the Chapudi mining rights were appealed.[1]

In November 2019, the Department of Mineral Resources granted MC Mining rights to the Generaal project.[6] When all three projects get greenlit by DMR, MC Mining will begin "the various studies required for the outstanding water and environmental regulatory approvals."[1]

Total mineable reserves:[1]
Chapudi coal project -- 1,318 million tonnes
Mopane coal project -- 24 million tonnes
Generaal coal project -- 55 million tonnes
