Greenhouse gases, sectors and source categories

This is a term used in United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations to refer to whether additional greenhouse gases will be included in a future agreement aimed to limiting global warming and whether the emissions from international aviation and maritime sources will be included in a future agreement.
The Earth Negotiations Bulletin, which reports on all major UNFCCC meetings, noted in August 2008 that "parties have expressed strong differences on inclusion of aviation and maritime emissions under the Protocol, with the EU, Norway and others supporting more discussions on this topic under the UNFCCC process, while others have noted that the issue is also being addressed under the International Civil Aviation Organization and International Maritime Organization."[1] (See Greenhouse gas emissions from the international maritime industry and Greenhouse gas emissions from the international aviation industry for more details.)
At the time of the negotiation of the Kyoto Protocol a number of greenhouse gases were omitted from the schedule of gases to be regulated under the convention. (The gases included in Annex A are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride).
