Harold Furber

Harold Furber was born in Alice Springs, Northern Territoryin 1952. He first attended school at the Croker Island Methodist Mission in western Arnhem Land. He also went to school in Darwin and Adelaide.

"Mr Furber has worked in both the private and the public sector, most recently completing ten years as a Senior Officer at the Central Land Council in Alice Springs. Mr Furber has been involved with organisations in Central Australia for the last thirty years, including with the Desert Knowledge movement for the last five years. He was a member of a number of the steering committees associated with development of key partners in Desert Knowledge including the Cooperative Research Centre and Desert Knowledge Australia. He is also a member of the Desert Knowledge precinct planning committee.

"He is currently Chairman of the Desert Peoples Centre (a joint venture between Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education and the Centre for Appropriate Technology) and Board member of the Desert Knowledge Co-operative Research Centre. Both these organisations will be based at the precinct.

"Mr Furber was involved in the initial Desert Knowledge Roadshow that visited the major towns and cities of Desert Australia (Mt Isa, Tennant Creek, Port Augusta, Broken Hill and Kalgoorlie) that explained the concepts of Desert Knowledge and was impressed with the acceptance and positive feedback this initiated.

"Mr Furber holds a Batchelor of Arts (Public Administration) from the University of Canberra. He also has a Diploma in Community Development and Social Work from SAIT (now the University of South Australia)."
