Harris No 1 is an underground coal mining operation in Boone County, West Virginia, operated by Eastern Associated Coal and owned by Patriot Coal Corporation. The operation produces metallurgical coal, used to manufacture steel.
The mine had a roof fall on its main line belt on June 12, 2010, and Patriot Coal said it will be shutting operations at the mine for up to a month.[1] On June 21, 2010, Patriot permanently shut down the mine. Although the Harris mine represents only 2 percent of Patriot Coal's 2010 coal sales of 33 million to 35 million tons, the quality of coal at the mine earns premium pricing, and Patriot Coal's shares were trading down 14 percent after the announcement.[2]
