{{#Badges: CoalSwarm}} Hawkeye Mine is a proposed mine by Knight Hawk Coal near Sparta in Randolph County, Illinois. Knight Hawk Coal plans to begin digging at the surface mine in late 2011. Steve Carter, the company’s president, was attempting to wrap up permitting for the mine in early 2011. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued a national pollutant discharge elimination systems (NPDES) permit for the mine, although it is reportedly being reviewed by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 office in Atlanta, Georgia.[1]
