Background

Several articles in 2006 and 2007 reported that Kiên Giang provincial authorities had decided in 2006 to allow Australian company Ensham Resources to build "a 1,000 MW [coal] power plant on Hon Chong Island with initial investment of US$1 billion." No such island exists; while there is a Hòn Chông Cape in Kiên Lương district of Kiên Giang province, no other mention of this supposed plant exists, and it is unclear whether the plant is in fact actually in development. As of May 2019 there has been no further news about the project and it appears to be cancelled.
