Hsat Mine is a proposed coal mine in Shan State, Myanmar, to be operated as a joint-venture by Thailand-based Sahakol Equipment Company and Myanmar’s Golden Lake Company.[1]

Background
In July 2019, Thailand-based Sahakol Equipment Company and Myanmar’s Golden Lake Company signed an agreement to establish a joint-venture company for a 28-year coal mining concession in Mong Kok. Sahakol Equipment plans to mine 300,000 tonnes of coal a year, mainly for export to Thailand. It also plans to build a 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant to supply electricity to Thailand’s power grid.[1]
According to local residents, staff arrived in September 2019 to begin preparing the mining site. Villagers took the opportunity to voice their opposition to the project, due to the threat it posed to their lands, rivers and homes.[1]
In 2008, the Italian-Thai Development Company entered into an agreement to develop an open-pit coal mine and build a power plant in nearby Mong Kok (the Mong Kok Coal Project), however, the project was halted in 2011 after strong opposition from communities in Shan State and northern Thailand.[1][2]
