Background on Plant

Huaneng Haikou power station was a eight-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 1,312 MW. It is owned by China Huaneng. Units 1-2 were retired in 2008, unit 3 in 2010 and unit 4 in 2013. Units 5-6 have a combined capacity of 276 MW and were commissioned in 1999-2000. Units 7-8 have a combined capacity of 660 MW and were commissioned in 2006-2007.[1]

Huaneng owned majority shares of Zhonghai Energy in 2004, and Zhonghai Energy's 276 MW Macun Power Plant (completed in 1990) became Units 3-4 of Huaneng Haikou Power Station, as well as units 7-8, completed in 2006-2007.[1]

Units 5-6 are planned for retirement in 2020.[2]

Expansion

China Huaneng has proposed adding 2 x 660 MW ultra-supercritical coal units at the power station (units 9-10). Although the project has yet to get permits, as of 2016 to 2017 there were multiple bids posted for its parts and construction.[3][2]

With no developments since January 2017, the project appears to be shelved.
