Ian Kortlang
Ian Kortlang is a Sydney-based strategic PR professional. He sold his corporate issues management consultancy to Gavin Anderson & Company (Australia and New Zealand) for more than $14 million in 1996 to create Gavin Anderson Kortlang, becoming the parent company Gavin Anderson & Company's worldwide Vice President (Europe) shortly thereafter.
In August 2002 he sold a subsequent consultancy to Burson-Marsteller, the world's fifth largest PR company (Source: Council of PR Firms, 2002), and joined the Australian branch of the company as chief executive. While that role was initially expected to be a five-year contract, Kortlang and Burson-Marsteller parted company in August 2003 [1] with Kortlang taking up residence in France for a period.
In the 2005 New Zealand election campaign Kortlang worked as a consultant to Rodney Hide, the leader of the libertarian ACT (Association of Consumers and Taxpayers) party [2], and he was closely involved in the running of the 1996 campaign that saw ACT first elected to the NZ parliament.
Before working in PR, Kortlang was the chief of staff to the Premier of New South Wales, Nick Greiner [3], and was later appointed the head of the NSW State Development Department. For a period he was chief of staff to Federal Leader of the Opposition Andrew Peacock, now the Chairman of Boeing Australia.
A keen yachtsman, Kortlang has been linked to a number of Australian America's Cup challenger syndicates.
Kortlang is the director of My Sydney Concierge P/L and is the chairman of public affairs consultancy Sinclair Thomas. He undertakes representation for a number of private clients, is a political commentator and a director of Media Monitors and Bond University.
