The Illinois Clean Fuels project aims to use coal and biomass to produce diesel and jet fuels, known as synfuels. American Clean Coal Fuels, the company sponsoring the plant, says it will also implement carbon capture and storage technologies.
The plant will convert an estimated 4,300,000 tons per year of Illinois coal and biomass from waste or agricultural sources into approximately 400,000,000 gallons per year of synthetic diesel fuel and jet fuel.[1]
Although there was still a functioning website for American Clean Coal Fuels as of April 2011, no new stories had been posted on the "Company News" page since June, 2008. The project appears to inactive.[2]
