Background

The power station is owned by Craiova and has 2 generating units of 315 MW each for a total of 630MW of installed capacity. They began operating in 1987-1988. The power station formerly had a total of eight generation units, three of 50 MW, one of 55 MW, two of 100 MW and two of 315 MW for a total of 1,035MW, but six of the units were decommissioned, leaving only the two 315MW units.[1]

In 2012 the power station became part of the Oltenia Energy Center owned by CE Oltenia, a company that produces 95 per cent of Romania’s brown coal and can cover 30 per cent of the country’s energy consumption. CE Oltenia was set up in 2012 through the merger of four thermal power plants (Isalnita Power Station, Rovinari Power Station, Turceni power station, and Craiova II Power Station) and of the surface mines located in the Oltenia basin.[2]

Expansion plans

Isalnita-3 Power Station is a proposed 500 MW thermal power plant to be added to the station, planned by Craiova, for a total of 1,535MW. The EUR$650 million investment is designed to also burn natural gas. In 2010 it was reported that only AES in the US remained interested in the project after Edison (Italy) and CEZ (Czech Republic) pulled out.[3]

Since no further progress on the project has been reported in four years, as of mid-2014 it appears the project has been abandoned.
