James King

James King "is Program Associate for the Women's Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equity (WISE) and Research & Writing Director at the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) in New York City and a graduate student in Islamic Studies at Columbia University.

"King holds extensive experience in the Arab world, and has been the recipient of a number of grants to the region. In 2005-2006, he was a Fulbright Grantee in Jordan, where he studied Arabic and researched the impact of Arab nationalism and conceptions of Islamic unity on American democratization policies. In 2007, he received an American Institute for Yemeni Studies (AIYS) Fellowship to continue his Arabic studies and research contemporary Zaydism. While in Yemen, he conducted interviews with leading Zaydi scholars on a number of critical issues that continue to shape Zaydism today. He will use this research for his thesis at Columbia, “Zaydis in a Post-Zaydi Yemen: Ulama Reactions to Zaydism’s Marginalization in the Republic of Yemen.”

"King’s career and research interests include Islamic law and its application in contemporary contexts, interfaith dialogue, Arabic language and culture, and Yemen. He remains committed to providing thoughtful, nuanced, and fair insight on the Middle East and Islam, especially for non-Muslim audiences."
