Janez Stanovnik

Janez Stanovnik (1922- ) "was executive secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (1967-83). Before this, he was a member of Parliament, chief of staff for the first vice president of Yugoslavia, and director of the Institute for International Economics and Politics in Belgrade. In 1964, he was chairman of the Economic and Financial Committee at the First UNCTAD Conference and in 1965 special advisor at UNCTAD. After leaving the UN, he was elected president of the Republic of Slovenia and retired when Slovenia became independent from the former Yugoslavia in 1990. He was born in Slovenia and educated at the University of Ljublijana and the Institute for Social Sciences in Belgrade."
