Background on Plant
The first units of the Kashirskaya plant were built in 1919-22, under Premier V.I. Lenin's GOELRO electrification plan. These original units burned lignite (brown) coal.
In 1967-70, the plant was expanded with the construction of three new 300-MW coal dust-burning units. In the early 1970's, three additional 300-MW gas-fired units were added, with work completed in 1976.
Following a fire in 2002, the third unit was renovated in 2007-08, with work being completed in 2009.[1][2]
Inter RAO plans to decommission the coal-fired Units 4 & 5 in January 2019 (and to decommission the gas-fired units in January 2020), which will leave only the recently renovated coal-fired Unit 6 in commission.[3][4] As of June 2019 reports in Russian media indicate that the plant is in the process of being decommissioned.[5]
Description of Expansion
The RAO UES 2006-10 five-year plan (from before the restructuring of RAO UES), which RAO management approved in January 2007, lists as a long-term project the addition of a 330-MW coal-fired unit at Kashirskaya, with a completion date of 2008.[6] However, this was apparently a modernization of the existing Unit 3; this modernization was completed in 2009.[7]
In its 2012 annual report, Inter RAO states that it is "developing technical solutions and carrying out feasibility studies into the key economic and technical parameters of coal fired generating units featuring installed capacities of up to 400 MW for new construction or modernization of obsolete SKD coal-fired generating units" at the Kashirskaya plant. The report also states that this proposal, among others, was under review by the company.[2]
As of 2016, there is no apparent news on this proposal.
