Background

As part of the much larger, regional Lamu-South Sudan-Ethiopia (LAPSSET) Transport Corridor infrastructure project, the governments of Kenya and Ethiopia agreed in June 2016 on a proposed 987-kilometer pipeline that would transport petroleum products from Lamu Port on Kenya's coast (which would also be built as part of the LAPSSET project), to Addis Ababa.[1][2][3]

In May 2018, the two countries recommitted themselves to working together on the LAPSSET project; in the announcement following that meeting, however, the petroleum products pipeline was not mentioned.[4]
