The Kevin's Corner Project is a coal mine project proposed by Hancock Galilee, a wholly owned subsidiary of GVK Group. The project is located in the Galilee Basin in Queensland and is adjacent to GVKHancock Coal’s Alpha Coal Project.[1]
If started the project could go on for 30 years, producing 30 million tonnes of coal per annum. Coal would be exported via a newly constructed railway to the Abbot Point Coal Terminal.[2]
In 2010 the coal company said that the project will consist of three underground, longwall mines and two open-cut pits.[3] Kevin's Corner mine plan is designed to increase to full production over a period of five to seven years after a two year construction period to first coal.[1]
If all three of GVKHancock coal's Galille projects were to start operating, Kevin's Corner Coal Project, Alpha Coal Project and Alpha West coal project would use the same rail link to Abbot Point coal terminal before the coal is exported. The three mines will also share site based infrastructure such as electric power lines, water supply, airports and roads.[4]

Location

Coal Mine Background
The mine began its application process in 2009.[2] Kevin’s Corner has all the necessary environmental approvals.[3]
According to Environmental Law Australia, since 2013 both the applications for the Alpha Coal Mine and the Kevin’s Corner coal mine have largely stagnated. The proponents have supported lengthy delays in the lead-up to the objections hearing for the Kevin’s Corner Mine in 2015 (in stark contrast, most mine applicants seek expedited hearings to minimise delays). The reason for the proponents’ support for the delays appears to be due to them deciding the mines were not financially viable with the low price of thermal coal from 2012-2016 and the poor outlook for the coal market. While the applications for the mines have not been withdrawn and continue as of September 2019, whether the mines actually proceed in the future appears to be dependent on a substantial recovery of the coal price and outlook for the coal market.[2]
Kevin's Corner was proposed by Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting,[6] until it was completely bought by Hancock Galilee, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the GVK Group, in 2011.[1]

Project cost
The Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation states that the "estimated $6.6 billion investment in the Kevin’s Corner mine includes a $2.5 contribution towards this common user infrastructure ($1.5 billion for the rail and $1 billion for the port)."[7]
