Background on Plant
The Kharanorskaya coal-fired power plant is owned by OGK-3, a subsidiary of Inter RAO. The first 215-MW unit came online in 1995, and the second in 2001.[1][2]
Description of Expansion
In November 2012, the 225-MW Unit 3 of Kharanorskaya went online. The unit was built by JSC EnergoProect.[3]
Platts also lists three additional 215-MW units at Kharanorskaya, Units 4-6, which it lists as "deferred." No mention of these units is available on Inter RAO's website.[4]
In March 2018 a new plan to build a fourth unit was announced by the Governor of Transbaikal and by Inter RAO, who cited a need for an additional 100 MW by 2025 to power the planned Norilsk Nickel plant and the planned sixth uranium mine at the Priargunsky Industrial Mining and Chemical Union site.[5][6]
