Kolaghat Thermal Power Station

The Kolaghat Thermal Power Station in Mecheda, West Bengal. It is located at Mecheda, approx. 55 km from Kolkata in the Purba Medinipur district.

Background

The Kolaghat Thermal Power Station (KTPP) was established during India's sixth plan period (1980-85). When the plant first became operational KTPP had only one 210 MW unit. The plant's first expansion took place in 1985 when an additional five 210 MW units were added in two stages. Currently the plant has a total of six units with a capacity of 1260 MW. The units were commissioned in two stages during the period of 1984 to 1995.

West Bengal Power Development Corporation is reportedly rebuilding its three oldest units at an estimated cost of 1000 crore. As of 2011 the West Bengal government was in talks with the World Bank for partial funding of the project. If funding is fulfilled, construction could begin as early as 2014. Project officials expect updates to the three units to be completed 2017.

Citizen opposition

In October 2007, Greenpeace India activists scaled a 250 foot smokestack spewing carbon dioxide at the Kolaghat coal fired power station. They paint the message "SMOKING KILLS" The activists had been charged with criminal trespass and violation of the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act of 1972. The West Bengal district court denied bail requests from the activists' who have been remanded in a correctional jail.
