Kudat Mill power station
Part of the Global Gas Plant Tracker, a Global Energy Monitor and Center for Media and Democracy project. |
Kudat Mill power station was a proposed 100-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant in the state of Sabah, Malaysia.[1]
As of November 2019, the project has not progressed in more than four years and appears to be cancelled.
Location
The map below shows the approximate location where the proposed power station would have been constructed in Kudat, Sabah, Malaysia.
Background
The Kudat Mill power plant was planned as part of a steel mill project at Kampung Limau-Limauan in Kudat, Sabah by Nusantara Steel Group Sdn. Bhd. The steel mill project involved the construction and establishment of an integrated steel mill complex comprising a gas-based, direct reduction iron plant; a hot rolled-coiled mill; and a gas-fired power plant to generate electricity exclusively for the complex.[2] The project was scheduled for completion in 2003.[3]
In January 2003, Malaysia's Daily Express newspaper reported that the State Government of Sabah handed over a 1,200-acre land title to Nusantara Steel. However, the company still had several factors hindering them from commencing work on the site, including infrastructure and facilities issues such as providing road- and water supply access to the project site, and the need to reinforce several highway bridges leading to the area to enable heavy machinery to be brought in.[4]
