Background
The MoU for the project was signed in 2012. According to the 2014 project plan by Kaung Myat Thaw Myay Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Myanmar’s conglomerate Asia World, two 150 MW power plants would be built in the first stage; three 330 MW power plants in the second stage; and three 660 MW power plants in the third stage. In total, the project would produce 3,270 MW. It would also include construction of a jetty to transport 20,000 tonnes of coal.[1]
In March 2015 it was reported that although the ministry had signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) with foreign and local companies for 12 different coal-fired power stations around the country, it was still working to gain public acceptance and had not advanced beyond the MoU stage for any of the projects, including Kungyan Gone power station.[2]
