Background on Plant
The proposed Kurzeme power station is being considered by state-owned Latvenergo as a back-up supply option in case the Visagina nuclear power plant is not built. The project would use either subcritical coal technology (435 MW gross, 400 MW net, efficiency 43.8%) or circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology (460 MW gross, 439 MW net, efficiency 43.3%). The project will use 85% bituminous coal and 15% biomass. Coal will be supplied by sea or railway. Pre-feasibility studies were made in 2004-2006 and updated in 2008. Because the Visagina nuclear plant is still being pursued, the status of Kurzeme is considered to be on hold.[1]
