Background
In 2013, four companies - Myanmar Ministry of Electric Power, Diamond Palace Services Orange of Myanmar, Powergen of India and Global Adviser of Singapore - agreed to build a 500 MW power station in Kyauktan Township. The plant will provide power to the Yangon region.[1] An MoU for the project was signed by the Ministry of Electricity, Diamond Palace Services Co., E-Gateway of India, and Global Advisors (Singapore).[2]
In July 2014 feasibility studies on the project were reported as underway.[3] However, in March 2015 it was reported that although the ministry had signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) with foreign and local companies for 12 different coal-fired power stations around the country, it was still working to gain public acceptance and had not advanced beyond the MoU stage for any of the projects, including Kyauktan power station.[4]
In October 2016 Daw Nilar Kyaw, Yangon Region Minister for Electricity, Industry and Transport, said that construction of a coal plant in Kyauktan plant would not be allowed. The statement came in response to a question raised by Daw Thet Thet Mu, Hluttaw representative, constituency 2, Kyauktan Township.[2]
