Linda Tarr-Whelan
Linda Tarr-Whelan "is a distinguished senior fellow of Demos: A Network of Ideas and Action in New York, and managing director of Tarr-Whelan & Associates, Inc. in St. Helena Island, South Carolina, a management consultancy firm serving numerous women's organizations. She served as a member of the United States Delegation to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, 1995, and was named ambassador and United States representative to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women under President Bill Clinton. As president and chief executive officer of the Center for Policy Alternatives from 1986 to 2001, she helped create five women's economic summits including those at the White House and 11 Downing Street, and public policies to support women's lives. She is also the former chief lobbyist for the National Education Association, a two- million-member union involved in promoting women's rights, and the former deputy assistant for women's concerns in the White House under President Jimmy Carter. She joined the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees as an organizer in 1968, a large public employee union, and later became its public policy director and head of the New York office. She holds an M.S. from the University of Maryland, and an honorary Ph.D., from Chatham College, Pittsburgh.“ [1]
