helping the United Nations tell its story
"corporate branding of three different parts of the United Nations focused on microfinance, knowledge services and an award for sustainable communities in the tropics
"communication consultant: Hugh Locke // clients: United Nations Capital Development Fund, UNDP Bureau for Development Policy and the UNDP-led Equator Initiative
"Three UN initiatives were given full corporate branding makeovers and a range of communication tools. The centerpiece for each branding was a brochure that incorporated a new description of their work along with a new logo, tagline, graphic treatment and images-and from that came updated websites, newsletters, powerpoint presentations and graphic guidelines. The microfinance unit of the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF Microfinance) supports sustainable microfinance by providing funding, guidance, training and information services to UN agencies, donors, and governments engaged in building inclusive financial sectors that serve poor and low-income people (1). UNDP Knowledge Services, part of the United Nations Development Programme, draws on 4,000 staff and external experts worldwide to give up-to-the-minute information and advice in response to queries from developing country governments (2). The Equator Initiative is a UNDP-led partnership that gives a biennial award recognizing community-level development projects in the tropics that link economic improvement with the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity (3)."

"This two-day conference at the United Nations addressed the the convergence of television, digital technology and the Internet – and drew delegates from commercial and public TV, technology companies, governments and non-governmental organizations from every region of the world. It was opened by Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations (1) (2, left), and included speakers such as Greg Dyke, Director-General of the BBC (2, center), and Jon DeVaan, Senior Vice President of Microsoft (2, right). While a wide range of speakers touched on issues of bandwidth, digital content and innovative television programming, their main focus was the fundamental challenges facing television in the digital age – including television’s role in bridging the divide separating the digital ‘haves’ from the ‘have-nots’.
note: Hugh Locke was also executive producer of the UN World Television Forum 1999"
the business world comes to the United Nations

"This was the first high-level meeting held in the United States to explore UN-business relations, and the discussions included the implications of a rules-based open system of international trade and investment that avoids protectionism while raising environment and labor standards and protecting human rights (1). The conference was sponsored by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), with the support of Ericsson, The Conference Board and Worth Magazine. Speakers included executives from Cisco, Ericsson, Inmarsat, Boeing, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), with a keynote address by Richard Holbrooke, US Ambassador to the UN (2).

The new group seeks to draw leading artists, performers and writers into the environmental vanguard to use their talents in support of conservation. Several well-known artists did just that for the dinner – music, dance, poetry and the visual arts all drew on the theme of nature. The event was held at Syon House (2), and on display was a special exhibition of paintings and drawings on the theme of nature from the private collection of the Queen and Prince Philip. Proceeds from the evening went to support rainforest preservation."

To mark the occasion he planted a tree with his wife, Raisa (1). The group's mission is to help create a sustainable future by cultivating harmonious relationships between humans and the environment, with programs focused on promoting a significant change in human values leading to greater respect and care for Earth's community of life in all its diversity, and to address the environmental causes and consequences of wars and conflict.
