Location
The map below shows the location of the Makum mines, near Margherita town, Tinsukia district, Assam state. The Tikuk open-pit mine is visible on the southwest side of this map, and the Tirap open-pit mine is visible to the northeast.[1][2]
Background on Mine
The 1 million ton-per-annum Makum coal mines are owned by North Eastern Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India). The Makum mines include the Tikuk and Tirap surface mines, and apparently at least one underground mine.[3][4]
Expansion
Two additional surface mining areas, Tikak Expansion and Ledo, are apparently under development. The timeline on this expansion is unclear.[4]
