Martin A. Apple

Dr. Martin A. Apple (also known as Marty Apple) is currently the President of the in 1973 founded Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP).

He received an MSc from the University of Minnesota in Genetics and Microbiology, and (in 1968? [1]) a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California.

Apple established the world's first transgenic plant research center 'International Plant Research Institute' (IPRI) of which he was president from 1977 to 1982. During an interview in 1981 with New York Times he said "We are going to make pork chops grow on trees!". When that quote appeared in the Times he contacted IPRI's chairman of the board about getting the newspaper to print a correction. But the chairman was quite happy with the article since it was great publicity. [2]

Martin Apple is a former professor of biochemistry and oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. [3] He was was for 6 years the head of long-range planning for the science society Sigma Xi when he became in 1992 President of the CSSP. [4]

In the 1990s Martin Apple was a member of the Board of Science Advisors of the Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP). [5]
