Background
In 2005 the Swaziland Ministry approved construction of a 1,000 MW power station in the country, near the existing Maswati coal mine. The estimated cost was US$1 billion. The Ministry said the plant was needed as Swaziland Electricity Company imports 80% of its power from South Africa, mainly Eskom.[1]
In 2009 Swaziland Electricity Company said it was no longer planning to build a 1,000 MW coal plant, because the coal reserves needed were "considerable." The company said it may opt for a smaller plant instead.[2]
There has been little news of the plant since the 2009 announcement, and it appears to be abandoned.
