Media Institute of Southern Africa
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) "is a non-governmental organisation with members in 11 of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries. Officially launched in September 1992, MISA focuses primarily on the need to promote free, independent and pluralistic media, as envisaged in the 1991 Windhoek Declaration."[1]
Colloborates with the Media Foundation for West Africa, and is a trustee of the Southern Africa Media Training Trust [1]

Funding
In 1997 they received a grant from the Westminster Foundation "To fund the Media Institute of Southern Africa, an NGO based in Namibia which promotes a free, independent and pluralistic press, to provide support for some of its local chapter offices in the region, to enable them to draw up action plans and develop their activities in early 1997." "This is the top monitoring organization in Africa. They got $800,000 from the US government. Based in Windhoek, they have chapters in all countries in the region." [2]
According to their 2005 Annual Report:
- "Total grants received under the basket funding agreement were N$ 14.17 million (USD 2.26 million). This includes the balance of USD 0.34 million brought forward from last year.
- Grants from other sources amounted to N$ 3.07 million (USD 0.49 million).
- Unlike the first two years in which we had carry-overs, there was an overall annual over-expenditure this year in excess of N$1.6 million (USD 0.26 million).
- After adjusting for non-cash items, the deficit reduces to N$1.09 million (USD0.17 million); of which N$324 000 (USD51 600) relates to the Basket Fund and the balance of N$763 000 (USD121 600) relates to the EU Funds. The latter has since been recovered after year end.
- Grants under the basket funding agreement constituted 82% of the total grants for the year.
- Total expenditure for the year was N$ 19.27 million (USD 3.71 million), resulting in an overall deficit of N$1.64 million USD 0.127 million." [3]
