Melissa Johnson

Melissa Johnson "joins the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy as the new Field Director. She has over 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. Most recently Melissa worked as a philanthropic consultant helping to seed giving circles and providing program assistance to Blacks in Philanthropy. With her work at Just Philanthropy and the Philanthropic Initiative of Racial Equity, Melissa has worked to promote and encourage philanthropy to move closer towards social justice and racial equity.

"Prior to this work, Melissa served as the program officer at the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, where she played a major role in the Foundation’s grantmaking, funding collaboratives, and community initiatives. She also spent time providing technical assistance to nonprofits on a statewide level at the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits. Her previous posts include time at the Foundation for the Carolinas and Catholic Social Services, as well as a foundation researcher and grantwriter for Wake Forest University.

"She holds a B.A. in English and Sociology from Wake Forest University and an MSW from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a concentration on community practice and community development. She also serves on the University of North Carolina’s School of Social Work Alumni Council. Melissa has been a member of EPIP (Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy) since 2003 and currently serves as Co-Chair of the national board of advisors."
