Background
The Melnik Power Station consists of three plants that add up to 960 MW. Power plant I is made up of four units of 60 MW each that began operating in 1960. Plant II consists of two units of 110 MW each, commissioned in 1971. Plant III is a 500 MW unit that was commissioned in 1981. The plants are fueled by lignite coal from North Bohemia and West Bohemia mines.[1]
2018: Plans for new units and retirement of old units
In January 2018 CEZ announced plans for three new plants to be built: one gas boiler (Melnik IV), one lignite boiler (Melnik V), and a waste facility (Melnik VI). Two of the old plants (II and III) will be shut down as soon as the new ones are operational:[2][3]
- Melnik I - will stay operational;
- Melnik II - will serve as backup as of mid-2020, and will be shut down in 2022 with the startup of the new lignite unit (Melnik V);
- Melnik III - the 500 MW unit will serve as backup as of mid-2020, and will be shut down in 2024 with startup of the waste facility (Melnik VI);
- Melnik IV - a gas boiler, to be commissioned in 2021;
- Melnik V - fluid boiler (lignite coal), to be commissioned in 2022;
- Melnik VI: Energy Waste Utilization Facility (ZEVO), to be commissioned in 2024.
Melnik II and III to be shut down
In March 2019, CEZ said Melnik III would be shut down in mid-2020, as well as one unit of the two-unit Melnik II. The remaining Melnik II unit is to focus on heat production for Prague, around 40 km away.[4]
