Coal generates half of Bulgaria's electricity. About 30 million tons of lignite are mined annually[1] (about 5 million tons oil equivalent).[2] EU grants are supporting the replacement of polluting coal stoves in cities.[3]

Coal Mining
Almost all the lignite is mined at the Maritsa Iztok Complex.[4]
Electricity
Total annual electricity generation is about 40TWh.[5] In 2016 coal generated 22TWh of electricity and nuclear 14TWh with natural gas providing less than 1TWh.[6] The main renewable sources of energy are hydro followed by wind then solar.[7] Exports of electricity greatly exceeded imports.[8]
Lower income groups are suffering from increasing electricity prices, but this may be alleviated by the sale of EU carbon credits as many ageing coal-fired plants are retired.[9]
