Merle Goldman
Merle Goldman "is a professor of Chinese history at Boston University. She is also a Research Associate of the Fairbank Center at Harvard University. She wrote her PhD under the direction of John K. Fairbank and also studied with Benjamin Schwartz at Harvard. Her work has focused on the intersection between intellectual/cultural history and political history. She has written a number of books and articles on the changing relationship between China's intellectuals and the state in the twentieth century, particularly during the Communist era. Her most recent books are Sowing the Seeds of Democracy in China: Political Reform in the Deng Xiaoping Era (1994) and, with co-author John K. Fairbank, the expanded version of China: A New History (1998). Goldman is co-editor of and a contributor to The Paradox of China's Post-Mao Reforms (1999)." [1]
