During his 11- year residency, he practiced a very rigorous yoga and meditation program that became the foundation for his peace work.

"In 1995, Michael and his wife took a yearlong sabbatical and world tour, traveling to California, Fiji, New Zealand, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, India, England, Scotland and Italy. Traveling light, they visited sacred sites, met indigenous people, and saw many natural wonders. This journey and its multicultural immersion have supported his involvement and service at the United Nations." [1]
